Bioplastics Prospects Rosy
The Commerce Ministry says Thailand imported $352100 worth of PLA last year, a 12% decrease … The main exports are film sheets and packaging material.
Higher oil prices are lowering the gap in prices of bioplastics and conventional plastics, increasing long-term demand, says Somsak Borrisuttanakul, president of the Thai Bioplastics Industry Association (TBIA).
The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation said last week that food prices were at their highest since 1990, adding pressure to bioplastics prices.
Thailand is the world’s top exporter of cassava, but still imports polylactic acid (PLA), a material for producing bioplastics, made mostly from corn.
The Commerce Ministry says Thailand imported $352,100 worth of PLA last year, a 12% decrease year-on-year because natural disasters decreased agricultural production. A total of 88% is imported from the United States, 4.7% from Malaysia and 3.7% from China.
